River City Jazz is the ‘Big Band’ for the University’s vocal jazz student’s recital night. Vocalist, Edye Evans-Hyde, voted ‘Musician Of The Year’ by The West Michigan jazz Society for the year 2011, will be featured with River City this evening. Edye will also be judge/clinician for the student performances throughout the evening.

River City Jazz will also be playing swing dance music for the student body. Admission is free and open to the public. Come and enjoy the fun with the band and the great students of Cornerstone.

River City Jazz will be performing Friday, February 8, 2013 at First Park Congregational Church, United Church Of Christ, located in downtown Grand Rapids at 10 East Park Place NE 49503, next to Veterans’ Memorial Park.

The event is billed as “Big Band, Big City, Big Fun” with River City Jazz and jazz vocalist, Edye Evans-Hyde, West Michigan Jazz Society’s ‘Musician Of The Year’ in 2011.

The evening begins at 6:30 PM with a delicious Italian dinner and the band entertaining the guests from 7:30 until 9:30 PM in the church’s Merriam Hall.

Admission for the meal and concert is $10 per person. Park Church enjoys following River City Jazz with David Wells, the current leader of the group, who is also a life long member of Park Church.

This benefit concert for the church music program from 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM will be held in the church sanctuary.  The concert will feature jazz vocalist, Edye Evans-Hyde, voted ‘Musician of the Year’ for 2011, by the West Michigan Jazz Society.

A free will offering will be taken in the middle of the concert. The band has a large following at 2nd church, as River City’s ‘founder of the band’, Henry Swart, is an active parishioner here.

To kick off their series, The River City Jazz Ensemble will be presenting an entertaining show, In The Mood, featuring vocalists Larry Young and Cassandra Caye.

Vocal and instrumental students of the University will perform solos with music department rhythm sections and later with River City as the ‘back-up’ band.

The event is free, open to the public, and lots of fun to hear tomorrow’s jazz musicians – today!

The concert, in the church sanctuary, has proven to be an annual favorite at Second.  The 7:30pm concert is free, open to the public, with a free will offering taken during the event that is used to fund enhancements in the church music program.
