RCJE’s Mike Lutley awarded Jazz Musician of the Year!

Mike Lutley

Mike Lutley

One of River City Jazz’s own long time members, Mike Lutley, has just been awarded “Jazz Musician Of The Year” for 2015, by the West Michigan Jazz Society.  The band is very happy for Mike to receive this recognition.

When River City Jazz founder, Hank Swart, invited Mike to play lead alto saxophone about twenty years ago, audiences immediately heard a difference in the band.  Mike’s skill and talent came through then and comes through today as well.  Current leader, David Wells, appreciates Mike’s devotion to the band, high level of musicianship, and his attention to detail.  Wells leans on Mike for  knowing where the ‘spot’ is in any tune that the band should be on the alert for before they play.  Wells also admires Mike’s heart for others.  Every so often, Mike stops to visit 90 year old Hank Swart so they can play sax duets.

You can find out more about Mike and the award by reading the WMJS February newsletter when you visit the West Michigan Jazz Society’s website:

River City Jazz is very proud to see Mike being recognized in this way. Congratulations!
